The festivities for Chinese New Year is soon approaching and many public spaces and homes are already decorated to prepare for the joyful celebrations that brings family and friends together.
A lawyer named Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz who is also the vice-president for ‘Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia’ (PUTRA) has threatened to report a public school in Puchong recently over their Chinese New Year decorations which he claims are ‘religious’ in nature.
The Malay Mail reports that the school in Bandar Puchong was forced under threat to remove all their Chinese New Year décor due to a complaint received from parents regarding these decorations being elements of religiosity.
SMK Pusat Bandar Puchong 1, located in Pusat Bandar Puchong had put up wonderful decorations throughout the school in preparation for the Chinese New Year celebrations. According to some people, the decorations have been a tradition for the school for the past 12-years and has never been met with complains.
In a letter directed to the principal of the school from PUTRA, the following statement was made as translated from Malay,
“The complaints we have received paints discomfort and unease among parents regarding the over the top decorations at your (the principal’s) school for the celebrations of the 2020 Chinese New Year… the school looks as if it was a market owned by Chinese people and contains elements of religiosity”.
Unfortunately, since the complains and threats were received, the decorations have since been taken down with many working through the night to get it done.
