Social media is a powerful tool. It allows us to talk to anyone, wherever they are around the world. The anonymity of the internet allows us to say whatever we want to whoever we want, without them ever finding out who you are... which can be a good thing, or a bad thing.
In the case of the lawyer Syahredzan Johan's case, he unfortunately bumped heads with an internet troll who showed him no mercy. He received a slew of death threats in a Facebook private message, which he hasn't replied but instead posted on Twitter for the world to see.
To provide some background, Syahredzan, who happens to be politician Lim Kit Siang's secretary, made a statement saying that controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik should have his permanent resident (PR) status removed. Zakir, who is from India, is considered an offender under India's National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Recently, Zakir referred to the Malaysian Chinese as 'guests', telling them to leave the country, saying that most of them weren't even born here. This had many people calling for his deportation, as many countries have already banned him for his problematic teachings.
Syahredzan then shared the troll's Facebook profile, and followed up with another screenshot, this time asking him how much he paid the people who came to threaten him. Syahredzan claimed that he didn't know who they were but did say thanks to his 'machas'!
Syahredzan has already made a police report, but that hasn't stopped the internet from finding the person's Facebook and sending a few angry messages of their own! However, most people have supported Syahredzan, who still stands by what he said.
No matter how much we disagree, let's try not to kill each other, okay?
