Once again, Malaysia is in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Recently, a study was released by Kisi, an American access control technology company, on the cities that had the best work-life balance. The 40 cities were ranked according to 20 different factors, including work intensity, social factors and city livability.
Among cities like Singapore and Hong Kong, our capital city of Kuala Lumpur managed to land itself at #40; last on the list when it came to work-life balance! We fell right behind Tokyo and Buenos Aires, which are #39 and #38 respectively. Inversely, #1 on the list is Helsinki, Finland followed by Munich, Germany.

If you're in the workforce and you're wondering if it really is that bad, well, it actually gets worse. The numbers also show that we're the 4th most overworked city in the world. 'Winning' first to third place is Tokyo, Singapore and Washington, in that order. In fifth place is another U.S city- Houston.

It's not over yet. Malaysia is also ranked #2 for highest number of hours worked in a week. 22% of KL-ites say they work more than 48 hours a week, which would average out to eight hours a day for six days of the week. The average number of hours we work, apaprently, is 46 hours a week.

Maybe it's all the public holidays that we have, but we're also third place in the least number of vacation days taken, taking only 12.3 days out of the year. For some, that's one too many days, as the average number of vacation days we're given per year is only eight days.
