After a 17-day trial, Singaporean woman Zariah Mohd Ali was sentenced to a total of 11 years in jail after multiple acts of abusing her maid. This is apparently the longest sentencing of maid abuse ever in Singapore, as she faced 28 charges of maid abuse and two charges under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
Along with her sentencing was that of her husband, Mohamad Dahlan, who was sentenced to 15 months in jail and a $1,000 (~RM3020) fine, which could be replaced with an additional five days in jail.
So what did they do? Zariah, being the main culprit, hit their maid on the head with a hammer, and threw her a sanitary pad to help with the bleeding. Zariah did this again before the would had enough time to heal, and had hit her with the hammer on five separate occasions in total, including on her mouth.
Khanifah, the Indonesian maid, also testified that Zariah had stabbed her on the shoulder with a pair of scissors more than five times, and slashed her arm with a chopper when Khanifah was cleaning fish once. She was also hit with a bamboo pole and a stone pestle on different occasions.
The abuse left Khanifah with permanent scars, a deformed ear and a finger that is impaired as Zariah once bent it back until the bone broke. Zariah, who appeared in court on a wheelchair after a stroke, claimed with her husband that Khanifah self-inflicted her injuries, but Khanifah's injuries were consistent with her statement.
What is perhaps most disgusting is the fact that the couple showed no remorse, and had been charged with maid abuse before Khanifah.
We're so relieved that they have been put behind bars!
