A Japanese Twitter user, @yusai00, came across locally made honey in Oita Prefecture. He bought some of it not because it was locally made honey, it was because every bottle of honey got a hornet in it! But you must be thinking, “hornet can’t produce honey”, you are right. Hornets and bees are natural enemies, but how do an enemy get inside bees’ honey? Did the hornets flew right into the bottle of honey? No, they didn’t.
The manufacturer claimed that by placing the hornets in the bottle, the hornet’s essences and extracts soak into the honey, making it more delicious and healthier. What?
But how did they put the hornet inside the bottle? Well, the manufacturer said the beekeepers captured the hornets alive, they were then placed inside the bottle and the hornets spend the last moments of their lives drowning in honey. That sounds brutal.
Also, you are not supposed to eat the hornet, just leave the hornet as “decoration”. The manufacturer also suggested pouring some sort of alcohol to preserve the insect once you eat all the honey. One bottle of the honey is going to cost you 1,260 yen (RM46.15) for a 150-gram bottle.
Even though we like honey, we don’t think we want to try this horney (hornet’s honey).
