For Instagrammers, Hong Kong is one of the best places to go to take some Insta-worthy photos. But these travelers are getting on the nerve of the people who are living there and disturbed what was once a quiet place in a densely populated city with skyscraper-studded skyline.
Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay is a densely packed neighbourhood with its building so tightly packed, it is known as the “Monster Building”. Because of its symmetrical shape and aesthetically striking architecture, it has become a favourite spot for Instagrammers and even used as a set for movies such as Ghost in the Shell and Transformers.
However, one local says elderly residents who used to play cards in the courtyard of the Monster Building now have to move somewhere else to play their cards due to influx of tourists. There was even a warning sign, asking tourists to request for permission from the residents before taking their photos.
Another Instagram hotspot proves to be more chaotic. A mural by a local graffiti artist, Alex Croft, featuring rows of apartment building attracts a constant stream of tourists to Graham Street in downtown Central District. However, these tourists pay no attention for their own safety, as Toby Cooper, who runs a pub across the mural, said
We have seen a few people hit by cars and vans on Graham (Street) but they tend to be the Instagrammers who are transfixed on taking photos. Their saving grace is the sharp corner – vehicles entering Graham are going slowly. As far as I’m aware, none of my customers have been hit by cars … yet.”
We all know how important it is to take some photos to keep as memories, but it is also important that you don’t disturb the locals and respect the rules.
