Humanity exist on this rather concerning paradoxical spectrum between genuine brilliance and the downright absurd. On the one hand, we managed to put people on the moon, and if aliens were real, they’d probably be a little impressed. On the other hand, we knowingly stuff extremely spicy things in our mouth to activate its pain receptors and call it a delicacy.
Enter the Daebak Ghost Pepper Spicy Chicken flavoured instant noodles by MAMEE. That’s right folks, because apparently Samyang spicy noodles and Cili Padi aren’t enough to satisfy Malaysian taste buds.
“Bah! It can’t be that spicy la!” You might think to yourself. In which case, let us introduce some numbers for scale in the form of the Scoville scale, which measures the spiciness of spicy foods in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Samyang noodles are usually in the 2,000 to 4,000 SHU range with one by Samyang Foods hitting 10,000 SHU. Our beloved Bird’s Eye chili (Cili Padi) sits around 50,000 to 100,000 SHU.
Our writer not understanding his impending doom.
Here’s the thing about MAMEE's new Daebak Ghost Pepper instant noodles, as the name implies, it uses Ghost Peppers in its seasoning sauce. Ghost Peppers sit in the 1,000,000 SHU range.
We had a rather brave but scared volunteer test out the instant noodles at the OhMyChannel office. The noodles have a black appearance which is menacing by itself. Once the sauce is added to it it takes on a slick bloody appearance. It gives off a strong smell but nothing about that smell keys you in on the spiciness.
That's your doom right there you're looking at
Upon taking the first few bites, the spiciness doesn’t become immediately apparent until a good ten seconds later. They taste surprisingly good and opts out of an unhealthy serving of salt to give way to the ghost pepper flavouring.
The Ghost Peppers are definitely muted significantly in spiciness compared to what they really do taste like by itself, so you probably won’t be running to a toilet, but just be safe.
Do you think you can take on the challenge of eating these? They’re only available in limited quantities at 7-Elevens currently and most will report only receiving a stock of six cups. Grab one quickly and prepare some milk and some tissues to wipe away your tears!
