Captain Marvel is just two days away from release now in Malaysia. Basically, it’s safe to say that a large majority of people haven’t seen the movie yet. But that isn’t stopping people from forming negative opinions about it already. Many people have bombarded Rotten Tomatoes with negative comments on its ‘Want to See’ section.

As of February 25th, 2019, Rotten Tomatoes, the American review-aggregation website for film and television has announced a major update to its audience rating systems. Namely, the website has removed the ‘Want to See’ percentage score for a movie during its pre-release period. The reason they’ve given officially is that they have found that the ‘Want to See’ percentage score is often confused with the ‘Audience Score’ percentage number. After the change, the website will show the following percentages on movies that have been released:

On top of this change, they have disabled the comment function prior to a movie’s release date. The official stance from the Rotten Tomatoes staff is as follows, “We are disabling the comment function prior to a movie’s release date. Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling”.

For most people this is probably merely a sensible change, you can think to yourself, “sure, haven’t seen the movie can’t comment la!”. You can also argue that it’s a section of the website dedicated to asking if people ‘Want to See’ a movie that hasn’t released and thus is fair game; however, evidently something pushed Rotten Tomatoes to make this drastic sudden change.
The consensus among movie-goers is that the recent influx of high-volume negative comments flooding the ‘Want to See’ section of the upcoming Captain Marvel movie had caused this change. Further down the rabbit hole, you’ll discover plenty of people are boycotting this movie just because it’s a superhero movie led by a female actor who happens to have political views of her own in the real world.

Brie Larson, the Captain Marvel lead actor, has gone on record several times talking about her wants for inclusion in the film industry, especially when it comes to film criticism and reviews. According to her, she finds that there’s too many white men doing criticism and reviews for film already, which leaves out certain opinions that are also worth hearing. She’s basically saying, “bagi chance la!” But apparently that’s too much for people so they’re boycotting the movie because of her.
Case in point, here’s some Twitter talk surrounding the issue.

So what do you think? Boycott Captain Marvel or hope that the boycotters are just Skrulls that Captain Marvel will have to deal with in the film? Let us know in the comments!
